      This is likely the best performance value on the market today. The Shelby GT500 Mustang has a monster 5.2 liter supercharged engine paired to a dual clutch transmission. It produces 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque.


      At $74,000 that is a bargain.

      Yes, there are options:

      Key options include a handling package for $1500 (adjustable strut top mounts, removable splitter end plates, and a Gurney flap) and a technology package (upgraded audio system, blind-spot warning, rain-sensing wipers, navigation, and puddle lamps that project a Cobra logo) for $3000. The big kahuna is the Carbon Fiber Track package, which costs a whopping $18,500 and includes carbon-fiber wheels wearing Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 track tires, an adjustable carbon-fiber wing, a rear-seat delete, and dive planes up front.
      Nobody is forcing you to get the Carbon Fiber Track option but it sure is a sweet option to have.

      The car will go over $95,000 fully loaded and no doubt dealers will gauge you on top of that.

      It's still a bargain at $90k+ when it goes on sale this fall.

        Love the power increase but even the previous gt500 with ~660hp had severe traction problems... AMERICA ó> Time for Awd

        It will be interesting to see how this puts the power down but I expect it will do better than the previous gen in that respect.

        Optional CUP2’s will help but imagine the lightweight CF wheels will help cornering but not straight-line traction....

        If McLaren can get the super light 720s to stick there’s no reason America can’t figure out how to but the power down. AWD is not meant for a muscle car.

        Youíre joking right. The 720s is mid-engined and has almost 60% of its weight on the rear tires giving it the traction it needs. The mustang has less than 45% of its weight on the rear wheels and that is the dilemma with it and other current muscle cars including the hellcat.

        Weight distribution is huge but so is where traction technology is today.

        Mclaren has perfected launch control, listen how it slips the clutch at the ragged edge of slip and traction ie when taking off from a dig. Although, it also has more traction to work with, giving it better capabilities all things being equal over a similar fe/rwd car.

        I've been saying it all along. Two wheels taking care of all the traction duties in a high horsepower car can only do so much. The AWD system doesn't even need to be complicated like the one in the Nissan GTR or even the E63 AMG-S 4MATIC (W213 / M177). It can be a simple fixed split AWD system (33% to the front, & 67% to the rear) like the one in the previous model E63 AMG-S 4MATIC (W212 / M157). It will still maintain the characteristics of a rear wheel drive car but have much better traction and put the power down!

        That’s easy, it is rear-weight biased to put that big power down and lighter than almost everything else...

        Electronics also plays a role but you can extend the traction limits of the car when most of the weight of the car is rear biased. If the Mustang weighed the same as the McLaren but had the engine upfront like it has now, had the same electronics, transmission, and engine making the same power and torque like the McLaren, the McLaren would still put the power down better because it is rear-weight biased. In my opinion, for high powered vehicles that are not rear-weight biased with most of their weight up front, you will experience the traction limits sooner. Hence, among other things and when trying to maximize traction on a front engine car with most of the weight upfront, the "cheapest" solution would be to go AWD.

        The power is underrated as some would say but I don't think that is the case when you see what is going on with how McLaren rates the power of the 720S. In my opinion, the McLaren 720S actually means 720 horsepower to the wheels, and not flywheel horsepower - and I've seen dyno tests that backs up what I'm saying. Depending on the type of dyno one is using, the car is putting down about 700 hp to the wheels. When you use this information and add the percentage for drive-train parasitic losses in calculating the flywheel horsepower, you actually get a much higher and accurate horsepower figure that explains and gives you a better idea of why this car is so fast.

        Yes and the question arises why arent the top-tier american pony cars performing based on their high specific outputs: the obvious reasons that come to mind are traction and weight(more importantly unfavorable weight distribution on rwd)

        The new GT500 will put the power down better than the old one despite having much more power...
