Talk about the ups and downs of racing... Hinson sets a new Corvette record at 234, then on an even faster run loses control at 3/4 track and violently rolls. Driver had to be extricated and was airlifted as a precaution but was walking around.

Wow great run and ouch. Ups and downs is right. They don't require any kind of cage for the event? After throwing that kind of money at the project what's a couple bucks on a half cage

He had a cage (they are required for 190mph+). It (and the A-pillar) were cut during the extrication.

The driver was apparently Lane Culver and the story goes that he (tuner/driver) & the car's owner were warned by M/T not to run M/T drag radials at the Mile because they weren't made to go that speed for that long. They (Lane Culver & car owner) were unable to find suitable replacement tires in time for the event and decided to take the chance. Apparently the crash was caused by one of the tires' beads coming unseated.

Why take chances at 200+ mph?

I have always wondered about the tires necessary for these activities and there is not much talk on the topic. What tires would be suitable for this?

I'm just glad the guy is ok. You don't need to take needless risks at 200+ mph. He is lucky he did not pay dearly for it.

here is the official 5 minute version.

next time they should concentrate on auero dynamics instead of 1900WHP.

Also if this was in Russia we would of seen this crash from every possible angle in HD, lack of cameras at standing mile just annoys me.

that isnt sad, thats plain stupid; MT warned him not to use these tires and he did anyway. What the hell do you expect at 200 mph for tires designed for 150?
Some people live long, meaningful lives.

Other people eat shit and die.

I'm not racist, I hate everybody equally; especially fat people.

It really isn't that stupid honestly. Quoted from tire rack
"When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or 149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph, how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities"
Y rated is only good to 186. Also check out things like when Top Gear goes for the top speed of the Veyron. They talk about not knowing if the tires could take it. You're really venturing into area where there are no guarantees and you're just banking on over-engineering

    Still need to establish this.

What are the best tires for the mile? No one really ever discusses this yet a bunch of cars are going 200+.

exactly right, z is rated at 149+ while y is rated at a hard 186 sans over engineering... ive seen how bugatti tests their tires, on a suped up treadmill and a high speed roller for the tire, it even swivels. even though bugatti is ultra high class, doesnt mean we cant use the same tech and what not to produce similar tests for over 200. the only tire i know other than special makes for race/special tires for a specific car (like the veyron) is the continental V-Max which you can get in speeds of 200, 210, 220, and 230 models tops i believe. link: http://www.conti-online.com/generato...tact-vmax.html i hope more companies can jump on the bandwagon, it would be very relieving to all the top dogs if they trusted their tires more, and for those of them that are ignorant enough to just push the limits of the z or y rated tires, all i can say is good luck.
